So you have now chosen to go ahead and start a blog. You are excited, motivated and buzzing about this new project and the opportunities that may lie ahead of you. Before you jump into it all head first and make your project live to the world it is important to consider several things to make sure you start off on the right foot. Here are the three main things to consider before starting:
1. Consider the topic
It is normally best to have a primary theme of your content and to be consistent in writing about the chosen theme throughout your site. So the question to ask yourself is what you can and want to write about? What topics are you interested in and have knowledge about? If you are very knowledgeable on the subject you chose to write about, it will be much easier for you to create interesting content that people would like to read and learn from. This will contribute to your growing your site and making it a success.
Don’t fall into the trap of thinking text only. Your content can be in any format so do consider that when thinking about what topic to choose. traditionally most sites do focus on text only content, but you may be better at drawing, or taking pictures, or creating cool looking presentational slides or even videos or podcasting. It is a very important thing to decide on before proceeding.
2. Is there an audience for your topic?
Now that you know topics you want to focus on you have to consider is there is the interest for the topic and if there is any potential visitors and readers. With blogging you can be heard and you can share your views with the wider community. When you know the topic that you are interested in writing about, you must consider if there are people that would like to read about it. In order to reach an audience, the topic of your site should be something that will interest some people. So take that into consideration.
Have a look around for example to see if there are other blogs in this topic area already. How popular are they? Do they have many followers in social media? Do they get many comments? Do they have sponsors? Answering these questions will help you decide if the topic you have chosen has the potential to do well for you.
3. Figure out a name and domain name
Now that you have the topic and that you know that there is a potential audience that would like to read, learn and interact about the topic that you have chosen you must consider how to name your blog. This is important as you will need a title and you will need to register a domain name. Domain name choice is monumental as that is how your blog will be found by visitors and the title/domain name will brand you and will make you recognizable from all the other competitors.
It is a recommended practice that your domain name will be the same as the name of your blog. Also it is recommended for the domain name to be short and memorable. It should be something that people can easily remember and be able to type into their browsers. One of the options you have is figuring out a cool sounding name for your brand – think Yahoo or Google. The other option is to be simple and go for your own name or nickname as the name of the blog. Third option is to find a name that describes what your website is about and what it offers your users.
All in all these 3 things are not to be taken lightly. You do need to take enough time to think about all the options and to get to the right conclusions and decisions. Right conclusions and decisions will allow you to build and grow a better blog.
