Go To Bed Better Than You Were When You Woke Up

A frequent thing I discover while talking to different bloggers is the lack of overview and focus. Some wanna-be bloggers feel overwhelmed and do not know how to take the first step while some existing bloggers just seem lost and stuck in the daily rut with no focus and goals.

A phrase that I keep repeating in situations when talking to some of these bloggers is “I go to bed every night a little wiser than I was when I got up” (I believe Warren Buffett said it first, but I got the quote from Charlie Munger).

Simplify the goal

What I mean is that you can simplify your blogging goals. No matter where you are at currently, the path to where you want to be starts with the step you are taking right now.

Blogging goals are achievable by simplifying it all and taking one step at a time. Take one day at a time, one blog visitor at a time, one Twitter follower at a time… think of very simple yardstick measurements for your progress.

There is no magic trick and there is no secret. The shortcut and quick fix promises from different gurus and their sales pages that you might read online or the secrets and tricks of SEO industry are just empty and will not do the magic trick for you.

Instead you must focus on the basics of plain old hard work. Take command of the situation, determine where you want to go, develop a plan for how you will reach that goal and take the first small step right away.

Thanks to Happiness Project here is a quote from Tolstoy:

Have a goal for your whole life, a goal for one section of your life, a goal for a shorter period and a goal for the year; a goal for every month, a goal for every week, a goal for every day, a goal for every hour and for every minute, and sacrifice the lesser goal to the greater.

Your turn to take action

This is when we come back to the “I go to bed every night a little wiser than I was when I got up” quote. Every day make sure that you do something that will get you closer to wherever you want to be. To measure your progress, ask yourself these questions at the end of the day:

  • Did I learn anything today?
  • Did I do anything that will bring me closer to my goals?
  • Do I go to bed tonight a little wiser than I was when I got up?

For me personally it helps to keep a very short summary of the important tasks I have done during the day. Sign up for a website like 280daily.com, it gives you 280 characters to sum up your day. You can select to get a notification email before you sleep to remind you to fill in your summary of the day.

Some days you will struggle to find any important tasks you’ve done during the whole day and those days will spur you to wake up and do much better and much more in the following days so these “wasted” days become less occurring. Make it a regular occurrence to go to bed wiser and closer to your goals than you were when you woke up!
