I got this question on Twitter recently and wanted to answer it in full on the blog.
@RoryTufano Having a great time reading through your site Marko. I’m having trouble picking a Title and Description for my blog – any help?
You definitely don’t want to be “just another WordPress blog”. Your description and especially your title are key to get right when starting your blogging adventure. Especially title as your title is usually the same as your domain name. You want to get that one nailed straight away so you don’t get into a situation where you need to move a domain name and rebrand your blog at a later stage. This can lead to a loss of search engine traffic and other downsides and is not recommended unless very necessary. Description on the other hand can be changed pretty easily at any stage of your blogging life without having too many downsides.
Make your title specific and descriptive
The key for me in getting both title and description right is to be specific and to be descriptive. You need to let people know what your blog is about, you need to give them a reason to click on your link and not on one of the many other websites and distractions that are trying to get their attention. You do this best by attracting people to click and you do that by being specific and descriptive and letting them know what problems you will solve for them.
Another thing to think about is branding of your blog. Your headline and your description are branding your blog and yourself as the blog writer and owner. Think about what is it that you want your brand to be? What is it that you want to represent and how do you want to present your blog and yourself? A quiet popular solution is to focus on your personal brand and personal branding.
In other words your blog brand is yourself. Your blog title is your name. Your domain name is you full name dot com. This is a good solution if you don’t mind putting yourself in the spotlight. Some people might prefer a bit of a more introverted style where they are in the background so there needs to be more thinking behind it all and more creativity involved for it all to fall in place.
Find your unique selling proposition
In any case even for personal branding it is important to be specific as just having your name as the title of your blog won’t tell people much. That is unless you are a big star and people connect your name with what you are doing. In most cases for a blogger that won’t be true. That is why you still see all the other big blogging personalities add more descriptive and specific keywords phrases to their title and to their description.
So what can you do to get it right. Take some time and write things down. Think what your blog is about. Think who your target audience is. What keywords would they use in search to find what you are writing about. What are you helping them with, which of their problems are you solving. How do you spin that i.e. what is your USP (unique selling proposition). Why are you special, why are you different and why should people listen to you and not to someone else.
Write down some keywords and keyword phrases, and spend some time thinking how you best can describe what you want in a sentence. Your title and your description should not be too long, you must be able to get the point across in few words.
